save and save as

Post by tnj » Tue Sep 28, 2021 5:32 pm

When I try to save the drawing, or save as the program closes.

Please try to toggle the file dialog under:
Edit > Application Preferences > File > Open/Save > Use system file dialog ...

That box was already checked. I tried unchecking it and applying the change save would not work, rechecked and applied that change and it still closes program when trying to save.

Please,
- Indicate the operating system you are using and the version thereof (e.g. Windows 10 32bit, Windows 8.1 64bit, Ubuntu 14.2 64bit, macOS 10.12, etc.)
- Indicate the exact version of QCAD / QCAD/CAM you are using (see "Help" > "About" or "QCAD" > "About QCAD" or indicate the name of the file you have downloaded and installed)
- Attach original drawing files (DXF, DWG, ...) if appropriate
- If there is an error message, indicate the exact message or include a screenshot of the message

Win10/64, QcadPro, QcadCam version: Current.

windows 10 home 64 bit, Qcad is 3.26.4 just installed last week. No error message when dialog box to save pops up, it hesitates a few seconds then closes program.

Does this happen when trying to save a new, empty drawing or with a particular drawing?

It is the first drawing I did, and it auto saves it so I can reopen it when i reopen Qcad but it will not let me name it when I try to save, it just closes program. It is not empty.

When program opened I did not ask it to open autosave file then tried to save empty drawing and it closed program. The only drawing I had was the autosaved one and now it is gone.

There appears to be something wrong likely with the file dialog on your system in combination with Qt (the toolkit QCAD uses).

Do you have a chance to run QCAD on a different computer? If not, I'm happy to issue a refund as QCAD does not seem to work on your Windows setup.

I have to go out of town for a few days, when I get back I will get an IT friend of mine to take a look at our chat line and see if he has any ideas before bailing out of the program altogether, thanks for the help.

I run QCAD since over 10 years mainly on Windows machines. All the way up from XP to 10 - QCAD was always working like a charm.

Basic rules for a proper installation are:
Use the correct installation packet for your OS,
Never mix different QCAD versions in the same subdirectory,
if the install msi isn't working for some reason use the zip archive,
follow the installation manual below https://qcad.org/en/documentation/insta ... er_Windows
follow the troubleshooting manual to reset QCAD below https://qcad.org/en/tutorial-resetting- ... on#Windows
Work smart, not hard: QCad Pro
Win10/64, QcadPro, QcadCam version: Current.

Another thing worth looking into might be your virus protection. I can imagine that an overzealous or badly configured antivirus software might shut down a software like QCAD when it's trying to access the file system or certain directories. This should be configurable in the preferences of your antivirus or other protection software.

Here's a list of software I found that is known to interfere with the Windows file dialog:
  • AVAST Antivirus
  • Box Sync
  • Constant Guard (often used by Comcast customers)
  • Druva inSync
  • HP Trust Circles
  • PC Backup
  • Actual Multiple Monitors
  • UltraMon
If you use any of these or similar software, try disabling them or uninstalling them one by one to see which one is causing the issue.
