QCad can't find user manual??

Post by cad_fiend » Thu Sep 30, 2010 11:42 pm

When I try to click on any topic in the user manual, I get a "page could not be found" message, because it is still looking for the manual in the original downloads folder. I tried moving the gzip file to my applications folder and reinstalling the program to no effect. Is there a file in which I can edit the folder location? If not, how do I fix the problem?

Mac G5 with OSX 10.4.11, QCad Pro 2.2.2.0

Thank you!!

p.s. even tried going through a complete uninstall/reinstall/restart - still wants to find that manual in the downloads folder, not the applications folder where I moved and reinstalled the qzip file!?!

Please refer to our FAQs at:
http://www.ribbonsoft.com/qcad_doc_faq.html#15

-> 15. I cannot access the manual in QCAD. It used to work in the demo version / a previous version.

problem has gotten worse...

Post by cad_fiend » Sat Oct 02, 2010 2:13 am

Andrew,

Thank you - I checked out the FAQ and, although my system did not have a file with the name in that FAQ, I did find the correct one (had "ribbonsoft" in it somewhere..." and trash it. This worked!

Unfortunately, I monkeyed around a little more and, long story short, I again cannot access the manual as before, and there is NO plist file of any kind anywhere in my system now. Tried a complete uninstall/trash/restart twice, even resorted to going back to scratch and getting a fresh download from ribbonsoft. Still the problem persists. Help?
:(

----- Similar story, becomes a Halloween story ---
In order to work with some vector drawings done years ago (in Micrografx
Designer 3.1) I had converted the DRW files to DXF, and now in Ubuntu Lucid
Lynx 10.4-LTS, installed QCAD (this from Ubuntu Software Center; qcad
(version 2.0.5.0-1+090318-2), qcad-data, qcad-doc, partlibrary, and just in
case, libqcad0-dev).

It wanted Qt for the -doc, so I installed Qt3 and Qt4 (just in case; there's
room now). But after working with the one file (of my back yard, for a
permit to put up a yurt), I wanted the Help/Manual to see about
dimensioning, and it couldn't find it!

I uninstalled qcad, (all parts), and Qt (3 and 4, all parts), and
reinstalled, this time Qt first, _then_ qcad. No better. Looking for help,
found the PDF of the manual, and the HTML, but no ideas about how to get it
to look in the right place. Deleted ~/.assistant, per one FAQ reply in the
RibbonSoft.com forum. Re-installed it all again. No joy.

Finally, in a sleep-deprived frenzy, started looking for anything 'qt' or
'qc', and did some (yeah, _incredibly_stupid_, desperate) "sudo rm -r"
things, that made no sense later, crippled parts of my system, and wound up
having me try a backup and reinstall.

Now I have a fresh installation of Lynx, and 303MB in 393 files later, up-to-
date; "sudo apt-get autoremove" takes out the old (9 versions back, from the
CD-ROM) version. Reinstalled Qt3 (only), and all the qcad.

Oh yes, my ~/.mozilla and ~/.thunderbird directories with mail, bookmarks,
and address books - were _excluded_ from the Back-In-Time backup snapshot!
OOPS! Removed Back-In-Time, after finally just copying everything back over
into ~/. Fortunately, recent exports of bookmarks and address book were
stashed over in DropBox, shared with the wife.

Apologies to anyone who was waiting for a reply from me; guilty as charged,
of almost terminal stupidity! GMail seems to have kept lots of stuff (since
we dumped AT&T-Uverse for their billing idiocy) so it's being delivered, and
I'm gradually re-generating my folders and filters, this time in a folder
set '~/My_Mozilla/FireFox' and '"/Thunderbird' and vectoring the profile.ini
of each to them.

All that adventure story told; while I'm trying to figure out how and
_where_ the Qt3 Assistant should be looking for the manual (I can see it,
in /usr/share/doc/qcad/html, but the [Help] button can't!) I'll just keep
the PDF open on the desktop.

META-LESSON:
The computer is a General-Purpose Tool; once the handle is filed and
polished to fit my hand, the apps are tool-bits to do work. Why do I spend
so DA*4 much time fiddling with the tool, when there's work to be done?

You might want to report this issue to the maintainer of the QCAD package of your Linux distribution. They packed it wrong if the manual cannot be found. Unfortunately, every distribution has its own philosophy about where to store what and QCAD has no way to predict this.

What I find over at launchpad.net, there may not be a maintainer for the LucidLynx qcad package, BUT:
Update 2011-03-25 19:11:10
Opened my Lot323YdQ.dxf, which immediately brought up a dialog to select the app.
to use to open it; at least QCAD was on the list. (I had right-clicked Applications>Edit Menus, added qcad to the Graphics group, commanding /usr/bin/qcad %U). OK, the plot plan of my lot is open; now select Help/Manual - still no joy (no manual text); dialog
(just above Command: line) is --
QPixmap::fromMimeSource: Cannot find pixmap "//imgs/qcadicon.png" in the mime
source factory (Package qcad-doc installed?) -- {Um, yes it was!}
QPixmap::fromMimeSource: Cannot find pixmap "manual.png" in the mime source factory
QPixmap::fromMimeSource: Cannot find pixmap "manual.png" in the mime source factory The link is empty!
--BUT the contents sidebar IS there. So [Edit>>Settings], skip [General] tab,
but [Web] and [PDF] look interesting!
At [Web], 'Web Browser Application' [ ][...](that ellipsis allows browsing)
I found, and put [/usr/share/doc-base/qcad-reference-manual ] there.
'_H_ome page' [ ][...]again allows browsing; I found and put
[ /usr/share/doc/qcad/html/index.html ] there.
At [PDF], 'PDF _A_pplication', I put the PDF Manual I'd downloaded before
(129 pages A4) from Ribbonsoft.com.

Now I seem to have Help/Manual! Yay! BUT-- somehow the sidebar doesn't point
to the right area; those links still get 'The page could not be found' in the
right pane. No diff if .../doc/ or ...doc-base is in either box, or even
/usr/share/qt3/bin/assistant. If I close the sidebar, I can use the icons to navigate the manual. Awkward, but sorta usable. More learning curve to climb!
