Saving changes in Drawing or Application Preferences
New user. Windows 64-bit. Version 3.27.
How do I save changes in Drawing or Application Preferences? For example, I want a white background. The default is black. I select white, but see no option to save. I exit the window, and the background is still black.

Re: Saving changes in Drawing or Application Preferences
Hi,
every dialog to change settings offers an "Ok" and an "Apply" button. Just click one of them and it will be saved.

A few settings need a restart of QCAD to reflect the new setting. Just restart QCAD. BTW: All settings are saved automatically when you close QCAD. Those changes are used for the next session or even for all upcoming QCAD releases.

Re: Saving changes in Drawing or Application Preferences
Thanks. I work on a laptop. My task bar was covering the "Ok", so moving it cleared that up.
I have changed the drawing units to Foot, Foot, and Imperial. So now I have feet and inches on my ruler.
I have left Grid and Meta Grid set to Auto.
What I'd like to change is the grid matrix. Currently it is 10" x 10". What I'd like is 12" x 12", so that I am working in square feet, instead of 0"...10"...1'8"...2'6", etc.
Appreciate your help.

Re: Saving changes in Drawing or Application Preferences
Run QCAD in a Maximized Windows mode and you have never to deal with that issue again.
Your drawing unit is set to foot what means your grid setting has to be set to X=1, Y=1.
Regarding to the forum rules please open for any unrelated question a new topic. Thanks.

Re: Saving changes in Drawing or Application Preferences
Hi-
I saved the changes (in both Drawing and Application Preferences) x=1, y=1, but my grid and ruler don't change. Still based on 10".
Don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Tried pasting a screen capture, or inserting it as a URL, but couldn't make that happen.
Also, I notice that if I am set to Foot, Foot, to see a floor plan of 30'x24', I have to zoom out about twelve clicks. Otherwise, I'd have a drawing window of about 6' x 3'.
Thanks, Allan

Foot, Foot is not wrong but Foot, Inch, would make more sense. Auto Zoom (ZA) will do it with just one command ...

Re: Saving changes in Drawing or Application Preferences
Thanks Husky.
I still have the basic problem: I saved the recommended changes (in both Drawing and Application Preferences), so x=1, and y=1, but my grid and ruler don't change.
So if I'm set to Foot, Inch, and x=1, y=1, I get a grid and snap every 8'4", so at 16'8", 25'0", etc.
If I'm set to Foot, Inch, and x=12, y=12, I get a grid and snap every 1.2". Which is little more useful.
What I'd like is simple feet on the ruler, and a grid and snap of 1" instead of 1.2". Is this possible?
It seems that if were on the metric system, things would be pretty natural. If I'm working in feet and inches, it's awkward visually, and snapping is to a grid of either 1.2" or 8'4" is frustrating. Unless I'm missing something.

Hi Allan,
to help you efficiently please attache that drawing or an example drawing which shows the same issue to your posting. On that way we can see exactly what is going on. Thanks.

Will this work for you:
Unit: Inch, Inch, Imperial
Grid: x=1, y=1
Meta Grid x=12, y=12
Dimension Label Format: Architectural

Re: Saving changes in Drawing or Application Preferences
Well, it's interesting. With those settings I get a grid division, and therefore a snap, of 3 feet when the full floor plan is in view. See below:
As I zoom out, the grid divisions get closer together. After 14 clicks, the grid divisions, and therefore the snap, are at 1". Which is great. The problem is that only a small portion of the floor plan is visible at that point. So the grid is arbitrarily tied to Zoom, and apparently not able to be controlled independently, unless there is a different approach.

Re: Saving changes in Drawing or Application Preferences
If this is the area that you have zoomed in on....... ....then it looks to me that the grid is ok, the top of the rectangle is just below the 9'-0" horizontal and the left of the rectangle is just to the left of the 24'-0" grid in both views. The grid is fixed at 0,0 and doesn't move. Or am I reading your post incorrectly ??

Hi-
What you're seeing is just part of the dining table in the full floor plan. Which isn't very useful. So I'm thinking I can't view and work on the whole floor plan with a 1" grid and snap in QCAD. And that the grid and snap can't be independently set, so that zooming (which is necessary to see the full plan) would simply enlarge or shrink the grid.

From Edit>Drawing Preferences>General>Grid, in Viewport 1 area make sure Display Grid is checked, and then in Grid Spacing, set X and Y to what ever spacing you need, you can either type a value in or pick a value from the drop down list.

Re: Saving changes in Drawing or Application Preferences
Hi-
Yes. The upper image showing the full floor plan was based on the following settings for Drawing Preferences suggested by HUSKY:
Unit: Inch, Inch, Imperial
Grid: x=1, y=1
Meta Grid x=12, y=12
Dimension Label Format: Architectural
These produced the grid and snap of 3 feet, which is unhelpful. Maybe I am being unrealistic to work in 1" increments on a viewport that is showng about 72'x36'(at the zoom level needed to see the full floor plan). I could probably live with 3" to 6" increments. But I'm not sure how to get that, given that grid and meta grid values produce different grid and snap increments depending on the zoom level. I'm not sure what the meta grid does, but surmised it is the small grid within the larger grid. "Meta" or "meta grid" is not even mentioned in the E QCAD training book, or under Help > Reference Manual.
In working on a floor plan with the full plan in view, perhaps I'd like a shape that is 20'9" long, or some other random distance that doesn't correspond to the grid and snap. It seems that drawing the shape out with the tool, and snapping it to the desired point, would not be practical, and I would have to use only the tools that allow drawing to a specified distance.
I'm not sure what to think. I like the tools and capabilities of QCAD. I'm not sure about the practicality for floor plans. And maybe I'm doing something wrong, but maybe not.
