DWG or DXF

Post by seasdes » Thu Feb 18, 2021 9:14 pm

Should I be using DWG or DXF files?

Is there a difference in features or performance?

I don't know much about the inner workings of the two file formats, but DWG is an Autodesk proprietary format, while DXF is an open standard. DWG allows for some AutoCAD specific features like dynamic blocks and 3D geometry that DXF (and non-AutoCAD programs) won't recognize. I think it would be important to base your decision on your workflow and if you will be sending or receiving your drawings from or to someone that will be using AutoCAD. If you're just working within QCAD, I would think DXF would be ideal, but I could very well be underinformed!

Thanks. Oher than the formats are very similar and that they are very/most commonly used formats. I know very little about either.
Just wondering if there is any performance (speed) differences for QCAD?

I don’t have enough experience to know about performance between the two formats inside of QCAD. I’ve always stuck to DXF when creating my own files, and those, along with the few DWG files I’ve worked with using QCAD, weren’t very complex files at all. Perhaps someone else knows more about that?
