Many thanks for taking the trouble there CVH. I used 'Status' wrongly - what I meant was the visual feedback when segments of a line are highligted by hovering the mouse, letting you see at a glance where it's divided or joined. And I take note of the rest of your helpful post.
I've now been playing around with various other things and have to say that, whereas I would previously spend my time with Blender cursing and scowling, I now find myself with a satisfied smile on my face.
