I am having a problem hatching. No problem when I draw a continuous line with same start and end or a rectangle outside of a drawing but when I try to do the same within a drawing, say a wall which I know to be a continuous line, then I get advise note in red saying
"loop not closed at point...' and there seems to be no way of connecting said loop. Where am I going wrong please.

Please check for duplicate entities for example by selecting your entities and checking if the selection count in the status bar matches your expectations. You can also use Modify > Detection > Detect Duplicates.
