Can't replicate your TA .. TN .. Alt-Select issue, sorry.
There is no Preference in 'Behavior' that could be turned off.

An option you could try in last resort is resetting your configuration:

Things I have tried on the Linux laptop:
ALT+ right-click

Selecting is with the left mouse button.
Alt-Select is also with the left mouse button.

If there is but one entity in the vicinity of the cursor then Alt-Select acts the same as selecting.

About grouping, yes ACAD has something like that (but as you say a little bit wonky) while Rhino3D has a very good one. In the long, long run, I'm thinking of using FreeCad to do a 3D version of these pieces. And maybe designing an exploded view. All good fun.
