Layers and changing layers attributes

Post by algrass » Fri Aug 28, 2015 7:45 am

I have a drawing with some 18 different layers. Each layer attributes is the same except for the colour which is different and specific to each layer. It all works fine. However, if I select any of the layers, except layer 0, and change any of the attributes, line type or line dimension, the changes do not take place.
Yet, if I start a new file and predefine x-numbers of layers each with different attributes then each one works as expected.
I tried Misc>Mod>Reload Line type definition, but nothing happens. I tried in Preferences and increased the dashed line to 5000 before showing as continuous lines, just in case, but it had no effect. The program edit layer feature does not appear to be working.
Any ideas what I have to do to correct this issue?

For all support requests, please:
- indicate the operating system you are using and version thereof
- indicate the exact version of QCAD you are using (see Help > About or QCAD > About QCAD)
- attach original drawing files (DXF, DWG, ...) if appropriate
- include screenshots if appropriate

Hello Andrew,
Here is the info you requested, two attachment. If these check ok I will send the dxf file. But basically you can reproduce the fault yourself by defining a set of layers first with only colour attributes. Then draw a couple of lines to save the file. Thereafter reload the same file and try changing the other attributes of the layers. You should find that they don't work.

Incidentally, I downloaded just now version 3.10.0 but it does not make any difference, the layers attributes cannot be edited other than the colour. I also noted that with this new version after launching, QCAD is not active again. So now I have to go and remove those two lines again from that file.

Thanks for the information.

No, I cannot reproduce this here (same operating system and QCAD version).

Here's how I proceed:

Creating the file:
- File > New
- Add layer named "red" with color set to "red", lineweight "0.20mm", linetype "Continuous"
- File > Save as... to save drawing
- File > Close

Loading the saved file, changing layer attributes:
- File > Open to open saved file again
- Click on layer "red"
- Layer > Edit Layer
- Change lineweight to "1.00mm"
- Change linetype to "Border"
- OK

Verifying change of layer attributes:
- Layer > Edit Layer
- Verify that lineweight and linetype are changed

This all seems to work just fine. Where do you do things differently? Thanks.

Let me repeat your procedure Andrew and see if I discover something. I will get back to you.

Ok I started a new file with three layers and enclose a screenshot highlighting the red layer and its corresponding Edit Layer dialog box.

I then reloaded the same file and changed the linetype and lineweight of the red layer. Then drew another line and nothing happened, the changes are ignored. See screenshot 2.

I tried yet another file from scratch. The default New.
Apart from layer 0 I created 2 other layers: Red layer and Green layer. I drew a line with each layer and appended the edit layer dialog box to see how I set the layer attributes. But as you can see both the red and green layers show a line like that of layer 0 except for the colour. Thickness and linetype are ignored. Yet this seems to have worked for me before. I am puzzled!

Hi Al,

what are your settings for "View"?

"Screen Based Linetypes" or "Draft Mode"

In "Draft Mode" you will not see any changes on the screen - but there are there.
Work smart, not hard: QCad Pro
Win10/64, QcadPro, QcadCam version: Current.

Hi Guys,
I just came to bed and tried the new version of QCAD, 3.10 on my Macbook retina and everything works fine with layers. I tried the old files and new ones and it is fine. Simple and powerful. So it must be a silly settings difference between my iMac and my Macbook. Perhaps I have the iMac set in draft mode, I don't know. I will check tomorrow. Thanks for this tip Husky.
What a time waster this has been? Now I can get working again. In desperation I nearly parted with about $1000 to buy IcadMac 2014! I almost wish I had stayed with the Windows platform. But the Macs are beautiful hardware, the most advanced.

Thanks Andrew and Husky.
